NUTRIENT CONCENTRATIONS

To improve water-quality conditions, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) is working with states and tribes to develop nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) concentration criteria for rivers, lakes, and estuaries.

SPARROW-model results can provide information on the estimated nutrient concentrations throughout the New England region by predicting a mean-annual, flow-weighted concentration (in milligrams per liter). These predictions help define the spatial variability and can be used as a guide for water-resource managers to generate water-quality criteria for nitrogen and phosphorus.
