Sand and gravel aquifers are unconsolidated, medium- to coarse-grained material, discontinuous, and generally confined to river valleys. Other names commonly used to describe these aquifers include stratified drift, outwash, and surficial aquifers. These aquifers are defined from mapped information compiled from the state maps of sand and gravel resources commissioned by the New England Governors' Conference: Cain, J.A., and Hamidzada, N., 1993, Rhode Island sand and gravel resources, New England Governors' Conference, Inc., Boston, MA, scale 1:250,000. Koteff, C., 1993, New Hampshire sand and gravel resources, New England Governors' Conference, Inc., Boston, MA, scale 1:250,000. Marvinney, R.G., Thompson, W.B., and Walters, D.H., 1993, Maine sand and gravel resources, New England Governors' Conference, Inc., Boston, MA, scale 1:250,000. Stone, B.D., and Borns, H.W. Jr, 1993, Massachusetts sand and gravel resources, New England Governors' Conference, Inc., Boston, MA, scale 1:250,000. |
